What is Diabetes Mellitus?

The simplest definition of diabetes mellitus (DM) is that there is a persistent rise in blood sugar/glucose levels as measured in a lab or by a glucometer. If the blood sugar rises for a limited peiod after some medication or treatment, like steroids, it doesn’t mean you have any trouble handling sugar in your body and this can not be called or labelled as Diabetes.

Broadly, most people who have DM, fall into two broad types:

Type 1

Type 2

This is the majority, although we have MODY and LADA types as well.
